Family of CFIDS sufferers

With the availability of the internet it is dis heartening that family of CFIDS would choose ignorance and make statments like this:

" Yes, I do - you are always sad you never do anything but complain about how you feel and how you have been done wrong.  You refuse to move on with your life and therefore you remain stagnant in a life that is not going to make you happy.  Do I think that you let your illness rule you - I do.  You are in charge of your body and you could do things to help your situation but you don't.  It is easier for you to be a victim to your illness than to try and live your life like a healthy person who gets sick instead of sick person who is sometimes healthy. "

There are so many recourses that you have available to you as to what this incredibility debilitating disease does to the body and how family should support the suffers and what it does to the body and mind.  Calming ignorance does not fly in this day and age especially if you talk to some one you claim to love in this way.  Does my wife have problems with Arthritis energy levels and brain fog yes.  She is better off that some with CFIDS and worse off than others.

Claiming that you should just take charge of you body is ignorance at its definition.  The recommendations from Dr that treat hundreds of patients is "DO NOT EXERCISE" in the traditional sense exercise for the suffers is redefined to 5 minutes of movement every 6 hours or stretching for 2 min and taking a break.  There is also a recommendation that if you do have to work around the house you work picking up and doing dishes or dusting (Vacuuming is not recommended as it is too strenuous) for 2 minutes and rest for 20.  During a "flair-up" you are to do nothing you just stretch and that is all the work that your body can handle.

With all the emerging research into XMRV and chronic immunological diseases CFS is a Neuroimmunological disease that has a very serious brain component with memory loss and brain fog (Similar to Alstimers) with a muscular skeletal component and finally to top it all of a cardiovascular component (For those who do not know it effects the brain muscles and heart and blood there is also a large percentage that has arthritis with exacerbation of every thing with any kind of stress).  So imagine that every time you have any kind of stress you had to go out and run a 1/2 marathon while drinking alcohol instead of water.  This is how an estimated 4 million people each day in the USA feel each day doing basic chores around the house or getting up to go to the restroom on their own depending on how how sever your symptoms are that day month or year.

This was a PR since I started running again by 77 seconds from my Sea Fair time.  The next goal will have to be sub 20 minutes for a 5k.

Antiquated Thinking and CFIDF

It is amazing to me that people hold onto antiquated scientific and medical information that has been proven wrong.  After living with some one with CFIDS for almost 9 years it bagels my mind that any one could try to tell me that it is PTSD and you just need too get over your self and push through and you will be all better tell that to my mom who does and has vulchers swoop down on her when she over does it and her blood pressure drops.  How is the following list of symptoms any way connected with a psychological disorder:

-Constant 100+ fever (Just imagine having the flu for 12 years)
-When stressed in any way BP drops to levels that could be considered cardiac arrest 60/35
-After a day of exertion body throws off plasma (What you body does at altitude to thicken you blood as a stop gap till you can make more red blood cells)
-Constant elevated white blood cell count indicating some kind of unknown infection
-IBS like symptoms (blowing up till you are the size that you were when you were 8 months pregnant sounds like fun hu)

These are just the quantifiable ones that cannot be attributed to depression and PTSD not to count the things like brain fog, forget fullness, restless sleep, unrest full sleep, post stress malaise (this is the thing most people think about and fixate on I can say it is different that you or I getting stressed or stressing our bodies and feeling down it is a debilitating fatigue that lasts for 2-5 days flowing), arthritis, muscle pain from stress (it is like she ran a marathon while cramping it is like she drinks lactic acid because it tastes good and it goes state into her muscles causing them to cramp and rubbing them just makes them worse).

This is a debilitating disease that effects more that an estimated 2 million Americans and mostly women (an estimated 90%) this is more than breast cancer.  The only reason this has historically been a stigma associated with it mostly be lazy Dr's and media that called it "Yuppy flu" and gave it a stupid name like chronic fatigue syndrome because they were unwilling to see them selves as fallible if they are not fallible then the can find an answer for everything and CFIDS does not fit into their nice little solvable box.  I admit I am a guy and I like to solve things I read all the latest research and make my patient wife try all the new fangled alternative treatments that come along.

I feel powerless to solve this plague for my wife I guess that is the engineer in me it is what I do for a living put things in boxes wrap them up with pretty bows and keep them like that.  If only more Dr had the mentality of engineers figure out what is wrong and fix it and not the mentality of if I cannot fix it in the 15 minute appointment it is a woman problem or it is all in the patients head.  I thing that more this would have been solved Much sooner if it had been men in general Dr Listen to men and dismiss women.  I have had to talk sense into more than one Dr when they were going to dismiss a real issue with my wife as woman problem being to emotional.

Why is there not more outrage that only 28 million over the last 20 years has been put into research into?  I think that is because we have fallen pray as a society to the Dr way of thinking that women cannot handle stress and it is just women being women.  If you need more reference look up the treetment protocal for "hysteria" and tell me what you think I do not have a point.  This mentality is still with a large portion of the medical establishment and is like the racism of medicine you don't talk about treating men and women different but you do anyway.  I am not saying all Dr's are this way but in my experience when I talk the Dr listens when my wife has been saying the same thing for 20min to the same Dr.  My wife has been blessed with a great primary care Physician even though he gets just as frustrated as anyone he is right there listening and keeping up on the latest research. To bad there are not more Dr like this!

We the loved ones of CFIDS need evangelize for our loved ones that cannot or risk the payback and detriment to their already hare lives.  Pleas visit  The CFIDS Association of America at facebook or http://www.cfids.org/ and please donate to this worthy cause.

Cheers
